EVALUATION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT OF THE FEDERATION OF INDUSTRIES OF THE STATE OF SANTA CATARINA THROUGH SUSTAINABILITY INDICATORS

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the solid waste management system of the Federation of Industries of the State of Santa Catarina (FIESC), located in the city of Florianópolis/SC. This assessment was carried out based on the survey of the current solid waste management system carried out by the company. From this, a diagnosis was carried out looking for the existence of possible non-conformities with the relevant legislation at each stage of the management process. Indicators of environmental dimensions were developed and subdivided into indicators: managerial performance (IDG), operational performance (IDO) and environmental condition (ICA). They were an adaptation of the methodologies developed by Fechine (2014) and Castro (2016), as well as the NBR 14031/2015 based on the indicators developed by Milanez (2002), so that they fit the particularities of the FIESC. By applying the indicators, it was possible to determine whether sustainability trends were favourable, unfavorable or very unfavorable. Three dimensions, 22 indicators and 66 sustainability trends were obtained. It was possible to observe non-conformities in the stages of segregation, packaging and temporary storage. From the application of the indicators, very unfavorable trends were attributed for three IDGs and four unfavorable for IDGs and IDOs. The indicators that showed unfavorable and very unfavorable trends and due to the non-conformities found, adjustments were proposed in the GRS system. Finally, it can be concluded that although the system has indicators with unfavorable trends and non-conformities, the GRS system needs few adjustments.
