Abstract
The aim of the study is to discuss the relationship between well-being and access to water based on a context of international and national actions. Therefore, through a comprehensive literary review, it addresses the meaning of access to water for human life, availability and use, institutions interested in the theme in a global context, and historical actions implemented in Brazil to guarantee access to water, aimed at the development and well-being of the population. It is concluded that despite the debates and efforts spent so far and the good water availability, a large part of the population in Brazil and in the world still faces difficulties in accessing water and basic sanitation services. Thus, governmental and non-governmental organizations must pay attention to the peculiarities of different places and populations, considering the effects of historical events generated by economic, climatic and health crises in the world.
