Abstract

In the context of predatory ultraliberal capitalism, socio-economic inequalities and socio-environmental problems deepen, jeopardizing or menacing human existence, always with greater impact on the most vulnerable strata of society. The emergency of the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated and aggravated this reality, producing a very high and continuous number of deaths; several sequelae, whether immediate, medium term or not yet known; increase in unemployment, hunger, food and nutritional insecurity, among other consequences. In this scenario, the present text proposes to reflect on the need to promote integrative sustainability, in which agroecology and, particularly, urban agriculture occupy a space of great importance. Urban agriculture, based on agroecology, presents itself as an economically significant and viable action; socially responsible and healthy; environmentally educational and sustainable. The approach is based on extension, teaching, debate and research experiences in progress at the Paulo Freire Campus (Teixeira de Freitas), at the Federal University of Southern Bahia (UFSB).
