Abstract
With the emergence of the national solid waste policy, instituted by Law 12.305 of August 2, 2010, there has been progress in addressing the inadequate management of solid waste through its legal instruments. Thus, the objective of this study was to perform a social and environmental analysis in different neighborhoods of the capital of Maranhão, exploring various points of irregular disposal in places that represented the different social classes. It was analyzed data from analyzed Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics income, destination of waste and attendance at school or nursery, in addition to exploring factors such as housing types, standard of enterprises, infrastructure, among other parameters to define upper class neighborhoods, middle class and lower class. In this case, attested that the disposal points have divergent characteristics, besides having positive and / or negative influences that influence the irregular disposal of solid waste.
