Abstract

Sustainability is increasingly gaining ground on the world stage due to the loss of non-renewable natural resources and China is a major player in both degradation and the search for renewable energy. In this way, it is necessary to analyze its performance in this context, because the planet is heating up due to anthropic actions. The changes coming from this warming could result in the loss of many species with risks to biodiversity due to extreme weather events. There is a dichotomy between China's environmental degradation and the country's quest for leadership in renewable energy generation. The climate targets of the XIV Five-Year Plan for up to 2025 are: i) to reduce CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by 18% compared to 2020 levels; ii) reduce energy consumption per unit of GDP by 13.5% compared to 2020 levels; iii) expand forest coverage to 24.1% – in 2019, coverage was 23.2%; iv) increase the share of non-fossil fuels in the energy matrix to around 20%, among others that are fundamental in this process. The concern about sustainable development is reaching more and more space on the international stage due to non-renewable natural resources that are running out, the Republic of China is being a major player in this scenario.
