ABSTRACT
The adoption of sustainable actions and attitudes in the school context is imperative to promote the education of the population regarding the environmental balance of the planet. Local actions are the base to changes at the global level. Developing the practice of solid waste recycling as a form of environment sustainability is fundamental for the education of future citizens, ensuring quality for the agents involved. The present work aimed to promote environmental education at school as a strategy for the management of solid waste generated through the correct segregation of waste, reduction of consumption of industrialized products and reuse of materials. The chosen methodology was action-research, once it is carried out within a school and involves actions that transform the teaching-learning process. For that purpose it was accomplished: a) mapping of the physical structure of the school, identifying the points of waste generation; b) characterization and classification of waste; c) development of environmental education practices and d) indication of actions that may contribute to waste management at school. The State school Getúlio Vargas (EEEMGV) is located in the rural area of Fontoura Xavier, and is composed of 23 teachers, 12 staff members and 138 students, with a monthly average of 190.5 kg of recyclable waste generated at the school and 234 kg of monthly organic waste. The practices developed in the school have sparked the student’s interest in the selective waste collecting, leading them to realize that it is necessary the correct waste disposal, allowing the reuse of those materials.
