Abstract

ABSTRACT

In this work, reports of practical studies with the participation of ceramic companies and research in academic institutions are presented, showing the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of incorporating part of this residue, ETA sludge, into clay for the production of ceramic materials for civil construction. The practice of recycling through the use of industrial waste as the main component in the manufacture of construction materials can bring numerous environmental benefits. The chemical composition of ETA sludge is very diverse, containing various metals and may vary according to the type of coagulant and auxiliaries used in water treatment and also the quality of the water collected. Due to its chemical composition, ETA sludge is considered non-inert solid waste (Class IIA) that requires adequate final disposal. This work aims to present methodologies that allow the use of sludge generated in water treatment plants by incorporating it into the ceramic material used in civil construction. Characterize the formation of sludge from a Water Treatment Plant - ETA; Describe and characterize the composition of sludge from Water Treatment Plants - ETA’s; Describe experiments carried out with ceramic material and sludge from a Water Treatment Plant, in aggregate form; Demonstrate the cost-benefit relationship of the process under study. The experiments reported below show that the paths to the beneficial disposal of sludge from water treatment plants follow a trend of awareness and environmental management on the part of the business class in conjunction with academic institutions and municipalities. The studies presented show that it is feasible to incorporate between 5 and 20% of water treatment plant sludge into clay for the production of ceramic materials, considering the preliminary assessment of the characteristics of the raw materials.
