Abstract
Of all the environmental impacts that affect people's lives around the world, floods are the most frequent and damaging, especially in underdeveloped or developing countries that have vulnerable environmental legislation. This article aims to investigate the meteorological and hydrological causes of the 2024 floods in Rio Grande do Sul, as well as evaluate their socioeconomic and environmental impacts. The methodology used was bibliographical research on internet sites with key words from the study in question. Its justification is to analyze and understand its causes and consequences with a view to developing effective strategies for mitigating and adapting to climate change that intensifies the frequency of such events. According to professor Roberto Reis from PUCRS, “The planet is to blame for the flood. But the tragedy belongs to city administrators.” Flooding in Rio Grande do Sul is a challenge that requires integration involving government, civil society and the private sector, as it is a recurring fact that requires immediate preventive measures. One of the most disturbing effects of floods is the loss of life and the destruction of homes and properties that destabilizes entire families. This recurrence of floods in Rio Grande do Sul is an urgent cry for awareness of the seriousness of human action that is accelerating the environmental crisis. How many more people still need to die to think about measures?
