ANÁLISE DOS RESÍDUOS DOMÉSTICOS E PADRÕES DE CONSUMO DE FAMÍLIAS DA RMR: UM ESTUDO DE CASO ANALYSIS OF HOUSEHOLD WASTE AND CONSUMPTION PATTERNS OF FAMILIES IN THE RMR: A CASE STUDY
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study investigates the inefficient management of household waste in the Greater Recife area, highlighting issues such as urban drainage clogging, waste accumulation in inappropriate locations, and the spread of diseases. Improper disposal results from a lack of awareness, knowledge, recycling facilities, and selective collection. The goal was to quantify recyclable waste, analyze consumption patterns, and assess the impact of knowledge on sustainable practices. The literature review covered studies from 2009 to 2024 to structure the methodology. The research employed a quantitative analysis of waste generated by families in five cities within the Greater Recife area, interviews with residents, photographic records, and direct observation. The waste projection for the GR estimates that its 3.727 million inhabitants may generate approximately 122,000 tons of recyclable waste annually, reinforcing the need for selective collection and adequate infrastructure. The lack of neighborhood infrastructure hinders sustainable habits, whereas environmental education proved to be an effective strategy for behavioral change. The study highlights the importance of integrated actions to improve waste management, strengthen the circular economy, and mitigate environmental impacts.
Keywords: sustainable education; solid waste management; selective collection.
