Abstract
ABSTRACT
Marine pollution is currently considered by the United Nations (UN) to be one of the three biggest global environmental crises, alongside climate change and biodiversity loss. It is estimated that more than 11 million tons of plastic enter the oceans every year, and this could triple by 2040 if no action is taken. In the maritime context, it is observed that man, as well as degrading terrestrial ecosystems, also compromises the oceans. Large vessels, similar to floating cities, transport thousands of people and generate large volumes of solid waste, effluents and gases. When not properly managed, these pollutants seriously compromise the environment. For centuries, it was believed that the ocean had an infinite capacity to absorb everything that was dumped into it. This belief justified the disposal of oil, sewage, garbage, military materials and entire structures at sea. The idea that "dilution was the solution to pollution" persisted for a long time.
