Main Article Content
Abstract
The final destination of solid waste in the municipality of Arari, Maranhão, is configured as a serious environmental problem faced for years by society and environmental management. All waste generated by the municipality is disposed of irregularly on the road of the villages of Moitas without any engineering work that minimizes the impacts caused to the physical, biotic and socioeconomic environments. Thus, the objective of this work was to analyze the sustainability of the final disposal of solid waste over the Municipality of Arari, Maranhão, in order to discuss its environmental impacts on the physical, biotic and anthropic environment. To characterize the environment, a field visit was carried out together with the geoprocessing of satellite images from the Google Earth Pro version 7.3 program, which were geoprocessed by the QGIS program, version 3.10 (64 bits) with IBGE data (2017). Through the field visit it was possible to highlight and analyze the situation of the water body located near the dump, identify the environmental impacts on physical, biotic and socioeconomic environments and evaluate them through the qualitative Matrix of Leopold through the characteristics frequency, extension, duration, meaning and degree of impact. Therefore, there is a notable lack of environmental awareness among the population and municipal management regarding the generation, disposal, management and final disposal of solid urban waste (MSW), these social actors being largely responsible for this scenario.
