Abstract
ABSTRACT
The generation of solid waste is a challenge for municipal management, especially in traditional communities, dueto the lack of necessary infrastructure, the absence of actions and sanitary guide lines regarding the proper waste management by the population, and the limitation of effective public policies that minimize risksand negative socio-environmental impacts. In light of this, the present research aims to map the descriptive technological routes of domestic waste generated by the quilombola community of São Bernardo, in the municipality of Oeiras, state of Pará. This mapping covered dry recyclable waste (paper/card board, plastic, metal, andglass), organic, and hazardous waste, from generation to final disposal. To this end, question naires were applied as a research tool, and the data obtained were compiled and analyzed tosupport the mapping of the descriptive technological routes of these materials. The results obtained revealed that the reis no on-site segregation of waste by the population due to the lack of collection or recycling centers near by, in addition to limitations regarding the transportation of these materials, due to there corded distance from urban centers, making open burning and im proper disposal on the ground the main forms of management employed by the community. This scenario differs for metals generated in the community, as these are segregated at home, stored in bags, collected, and transported by a scrap vehicle destined for there cycling and marketing center.
